It was Stoke who had the opening minutes as they attacked the railway end, in the first-half, but failed to put the Weymouth keeper under any pressure.
Six minutes in and the first save of note, was a super diving save by Simon Grant, pushing the ball out for a corner on the left, which was delayed as both Grant and a Weymouth player received treatment.

Stoke responded five minutes later, as Tom Blake took the ball twenty yards before unleashing a shot that beat the Weymouth keeper, but grazed the left-hand post going out for a goal-kick.

Very little to note, as the Weymouth physio team, were called on the pitch two more times to treat Weymouth players.

On twenty-five minutes, Robbie Gallagher drove into Weymouth’s penalty area, going past two defenders, but he dragged his left-foot shot across the face of the goal and out for a goal-kick.

Weymouth forced a comfortable save out of Grant, with twelve minutes to the break.
This is a very drab affair as the game drifted towards the interval, as the referee noted six minutes of added-time.
Then out of the dark, comes some light, as short-term Stoke keeper Max Evans, now in Weymouth’s jersey, failed to collect the ball, allowed Gallagher to tap the ball into an empty net. GOAL! Basingstoke Town 1 – 0 Weymouth (Gallagher 45+4 mins)
A minute later the referee blew the final whistle, and Stoke went into the break with a fortunate one-goal lead.
Halftime Score: Basingstoke Town 1 vs 0 Weymouth
The second-half got off to the worst possible start, as within two minutes Weymouth broke down our left, and a hard low cross flew across the goal, to a Weymouth forward who although did not make a great connection, the ball found the back of the net. Basingstoke 1-1 Weymouth

On the hour-mark, we came close to going behind, as we lost the ball in our half once more, and the visitors broke down the left, and sent the ball across, only for Joe O’Loughlin to get a foot to the ball before a Weymouth forward had the chance to tap the ball home.

Stoke then had a half-chance, as a cross was weakly punched out to D’Andre Brown, whose first-time shot, was wild and flew well-wide of the goal.

The heavens had now fully opened, as the heavy rain swept across the ground, and Stoke had produced very little attacking threat, and we made our first two changes of the day, as Cheick Sylla was replaced by Joe Barough, and D’Andre Brown was replaced by Ben Cook (73 mins).

Stoke created one more chance as the ball fell to Cook, whose left foot shot was well hit, but unfortunately straight at the keeper.

A minute later we went behind, as a long ball, found their main striker Goodship, who chested the ball down, outmuscled his defender and slotted the ball past Grant into the net. Basingstoke 1-2 Weymouth

Stoke made it’s third change as Dan Rowe replaced Josh Green (82 mins).
Joe Barough’s first noticeable action was a shot that flew just wide of the goal.
Still very little to note, as we moved into seven minutes of added-time.
Still nothing from Stoke, and Weymouth broke clear, and in a neat-passing move, and a side-footed shot seemed to make it three, but Grant, stuck a leg out and deflected the ball out for a corner.
We had one more chance, but Gallagher’s shot lacked power, and was comfortably held by their keeper.

Dead on seven minutes, the referee blew the final whistle, and we go down to defeat at home.

Fulltime Score: Basingstoke Town 1 vs 2 Weymouth
Goodship 47 & 79 mins,                             Gallagher 45+4 mins,

Match Thought’s
Weymouth’s Managers came with a game-plan and it worked, by simply shutting down our wing-play, as they clamped a defender on Robbie Gallagher & George Reid for the whole game. A much bigger team, they appeared to out-muscle us for large parts too, helped by another poor refereeing performance.
We struggled to put their keeper Max Evans under enough pressure, who handed us our goal.
We still sit in eleventh, but are winless now in the last three games.
Up Next:
We are back at Winklebury this Tuesday (27th), in the North-Hants Cup as we face Whitchurch.
