Match Preview: Basingstoke Town v Gosport Borough

Basingstoke Town welcome Gosport Borough following a comfortable 4 – 1 away win at Frome Town and sit in 7th place in the table.

Gosport Borough visit the Camrose coming off a 2 – 1 win at home to Staines Town and sit in 11th place in the table, with two wins (Kings Langley 3-2 being the other), and two losses at Merthyr 4-2 and Hartley Wintney 1-0.

Gosport Borough come to us under a new Ownership after last season’s financial troubles had them playing most of the season with a small squad, and were in bottom place and only saved relegation on the last game of the season. Basingstoke did the double over them last season, stuffing them 8-0 (Wright 2, Smart 2, McKnight 2 Collier and own goal), down at Privett Park on a beautifully sunny August Bank Holiday Monday last season and then winning 3-0 at the Camrose (Bunting 2, Smart) on Boxing Day.

Clearly, under 38yr old Player Manager Craig McAllister who scored yesterday, Gosport known as the Boro’ will be a much tougher proposition on Monday and has Connor Hoare and Pat Suraci their main goal-scoring threats.

Basingstoke will hopefully have a decent Bank Holiday crowd behind them and with an unchanged team, should be favourites to score a few goals with Deadfield, Smart, Akers providing the chances for a dangerous looking Sam Argent. Jim Orvis looked good at left back against Frome, which allowed George Bennett to slot into a more comfortable position in midfield. Dean Stow has clearly won the role of penalty taker for the team and his play over the last two games has been a revelation in the right back role and has provided a good service for Sam Smart.

Let’s hope for a good defensive performance and another 3pts at the Camrose.
