Simon Grant Referee – Callum Parke This important six-pointer at the bottom of the table, got off to a sloppy start with nothing to note, until the tenth minute, when a Frome free-kick saw a forward bounce his shot into the ground allowing Mack Allan to make a comfortable save. The following minute we then won a free-kick as Robbie Gallagher burst past two defenders, but was then brought down on the edge of the penalty area. The resulting free-kick was however smacked into the wall, and Frome cleared the ball. The game continued to be a scrappy affair, as both teams struggled to put anything of note as they neared the opponents penalty area, which was not helped by a Frome forward needing extended treatment. On twenty-five minutes, we had our first shot on target, which was palmed away by the keeper before being cleared. The deadlock is broken on the half-hour, as Jack Ball was outhustled on the right-hand touchline and the Frome player continued into our penalty area, before striking a shot that took a slight deflection off Billy Upton, and past Allan into the goal. Basingstoke 0-1 Frome Two minutes later From could and should have doubled their lead, as a Frome forward found himself free, as he moved to the edge of our penalty area, but his shot was fortunately poor as he dragged it wide of the left-hand post. Stoke then had a little possession, as firstly George Reid, cut inside from the right, but his shot flew wide. Liam Ferdinand then jinked past his player, but failed to chip the keeper from close range, who palmed the ball up in the air which he then recovered. The referee allowed four minutes of added-time, before he blew the halftime whistle on a scrappy first-half, with Stoke needing to get back into the game. Halftime Score: Basingstoke Town 0 vs 1 Frome Town The game continued to lack any flow, as continuous niggly fouls by Frome players, intentionally broke up any pattern to the game, helped by a referee, who seemed unable to get his yellow card out of his pocket. Just before the hour-mark, their were chances for both sides, as a cross to the far let-hand post saw Allan make a save from a Frome forward. A minute later, a free-kick from the left, following yet another foul on Gallagher, was met by Upton’s header back across the face of the goal, only for a Frome defender to beat Ferdinand to the ball, as he made the clearance. The continued in similar fashion with Stoke pushing for an equaliser, but getting little change out of Frome’s defence. Stoke were then reduced to ten men as James Dickson, received a second yellow card. Stoke made another substitution as Jaden Brissett was replaced by Connor Barratt (77 mins). We moved into the final few minutes of the game, with Stoke still pressing, but putting nothing of note on the Frome goal, not helped by continuous minor stoppages. It was clear we had no plan B, and Frome’s defence dealt with us without much issue.
Played ok first half but we lacked ideas in how to break them down in second half.
