With the weather slightly milder than what was expected earlier in the day, the game got underway and after a quiet two minutes of play, it was Stoke’s new sensational signing Tom Blake who opened with a neat bit of solo play has he beat his marker, then thundered the ball into the top of the net GOAL! Basingstoke Town 1 – 0 Hanwell Town (Blake 3 mins)
Ten minutes in was when Hanwell had their first attack, as a cross from the right, saw James Clark get a boot just in front of the attacker, and a follow-up shot was blocked by Scott Armsworth.
Hanwell then won two corners, but their training ground kicks went woefully wrong.
Hanwell then made an error at the back, which allowed Robbie Gallagher to break clear, but a defender got back to block his left-foot shot out for a corner on the left.
Gallagher, then created the next moment of class, as he picked the ball up just inside Hanwell’s half, turned his marker and raced down the wing, then cut in past two defenders, then took the ball along the byline, but his cross was blocked out for a corner.
Hanwell responded with an attack which saw Josh Green go in the book for a tackle as their forward tried to break clear, and this was followed a minute later by a cross that saw the Hanwell forward unable to get a proper connection, and Simon Grant retrieved the loose ball.
Gallagher then had a fierce shot blocked away, but Hanwell then got back in the game as they attacked around our penalty area, and from twenty-five yards a Hanwell forward swung a foot at the loose ball, and the ball thundered over Grant and down into the net. Basingstoke 1 – 1 Hanwell
Two minutes later Stoke squandered a chance to retake the lead, as an initial attack saw the keeper push the ball, which Clark retrieved and set-up Armsworth, somehow put the ball over the bar from five yards.
Stoke had a shot on target in the final minute of normal time, but the keeper made the save.
Then in the second-minute of two added-minutes, Gallagher was knocked to the ground, and received extensive treatment before being able to get up and go straight down the tunnel. The game restarted and the referee blew the whistle for the break fifteen seconds later.
Halftime Score: Basingstoke Town 1 vs 1 Hanwell Town
As expected Stoke made a halftime change with Ore Bello replacing Robbie Gallagher (45 mins).
Hanwell had two shot in the opening minutes, as both were well blocked.
Stoke started to push forward and retook the lead ten minutes in, as Green broke into the edge of the left-hand penalty area, then sent over a cross, that the Hanwell keeper decided not to go for, which allowed Bello to run onto the ball and place the ball past the keeper into the net GOAL!! Basingstoke Town 2 – 1 Hanwell Town (Bello 55 mins)
Stoke had the next attack a minute later but Joe Barough’s shot was blocked out for a corner on the left.
Stoke pushed for the third goal, but another attack saw Bello again in the thick of the action, but he took one too many touches, and Hanwell were able to clear.
Bello was next in the action, as he found Reid, who hurried his shot and it flew over the bar from nine yards out.
Stoke continued pushing forward, and the pressure finally counted, as Stoke attacked once more, as Barough broke into the area, then neatly found Reid, who clipped the ball over the outcoming keeper and into the net. GOAL!!! Basingstoke Town 3 – 1 Hanwell Town (Reid 67 mins)
Stoke were gunning for a fourth, and the next chance fell to Barough, but his shot lacked the power to trouble the keeper.
Hanwell then had a minute of play, as Clark first blocked the ball away for a corner, then Armsworth was able to hook the ball clear thirty seconds later.
Stoke were then forced into another change as Ore Bello appeared to have picked up an injury, and was replaced by Conor Whiteley (77 mins).
Stoke made a further change two minutes later, as George Reid was replaced by Elliott Legg (79 mins).
Legg appeared to be playing in an attacking role, with a number of our forwards off the pitch.
Little action to note over the next few minutes, and we made out fourth change as Ben Cook replaced Joe Barough (83 mins).
Hanwell started to push forward, but good work from Grant who made the save and Green cleared the ball.
That was Green’s last action of the game, as Stoke made its final change, as he was replaced by James Dickson (89 mins).
The referee announced five minutes of added-time, and Hanwell who had pushed for a goal, got it, as a Hanwell forward open at the far-post headed back across the goal into the net. Basingstoke 3 – 2 Hanwell.
Then in the final minute of the game, Hanwell in an attempt to clear the ball from their own goal-line, passed it straight to Blake, but his shot from ten yards flew just wide of the left-hand post.
Twenty seconds later the referee blew the final whistle and Stoke’s fourth win on the bounce.

Match Thought’s
Basingstoke once again proved the potential within the team, and four wins in a row, confirms that, and with other teams idle we now sit in ninth in the table. Tom Blake continues to impress and improve game-by-game, and the defence looked solid, apart from that lapse for Hanwell’s late second goal. Hopefully Bello’s injury isn’t serious and he’s has back for Saturday’s trip to, as he continues to bring energy to the game when he’s on the park.
Hopefully Robbie Gallagher can quickly get on the mend from what appeared a serious head/face injury.
Up Next:
We are back on the road into Dorset, to take on Wimborne Town this Saturday (10th) with a 3pm KO.
