Referee – TBC
The rare Friday evening game kicked-off with Stoke defending the covered end, and there was little action to note in the first few minutes.
Then in the ninth minute, George Reid takes deep down the ball down the right wing, and a horrible tackle takes him out, and he rightly goes in the book. We win a corner from the free-kick, but Chertsey are able to comfortably clear.
In the 13th minute, another neat move starting down the left, and it’s Wilson who sends a shot that their keeper can only palm out to Argent, but the ball gets tangled under his feet, and the ball is cleared.
Another a neat move attack started by Simon Dunn, who finds Argent, who slides it to Touray, who does not take the shot, but flicks it behind him, but the homeside again clear the ball.
Chertsey have their first noted attack, after winning a free-kick which is cleared, and a cross which is held by Mark Scott in goal.
Stoke continue to push forward over the next few minutes.
In the 26th minute, we again attack down the left and a cross finds Argent just past the far post and he chooses to cross, rather than shoots, but he finds Touray who heads the ball against the bar, and they scramble it clear, only for the referee to blow for a high-foot.
Chertsey then have a couple of decent crosses which we are able to defend.
Then in the 30th minute, the ball is pushed through to Ezio breaks into the penalty area, and he hits the shot that hits the keeper but bounces under him and then into the roof of the net. GOAL! Chertsey Town 0 – 1 Basingstoke Town (Touray 30 mins)
Chertsey then have another shot, but Scott deals with it,
The Stoke chant “Shoes off if you love the Stoke” behind the goal, is met by many with shoes off being waved in the air.
Then we attack down the left once more, the ball is slipped to Wilson, who takes the ball on his right as he enters the box, and then lets fly that curves into the far corner of the net. GOAL!! Chertsey Town 0 – 2 Basingstoke Town (Wilson 34 mins)
Chertsey have a couple of minutes of attack, which includes a volleyed shot from around the penalty spot, that flies straight into the arms of Scott.
We play out the last few minutes of the first-half, and the referee plays two minutes of injury-time, before blowing the halftime whistle.
Halftime – Chertsey Town 0 v 2 Basingstoke Town
The second-half gets underway with no changes by Stoke, and the first noted attack is when we break down the left through James Hayworth who sends a decent cross into the box, which Chertsey hoof clear and they break dangerously down the right, but the cross is knocked wide of the far post.
Simon Dunn goes in the referee’s book for a tackle (51 mins)
We continue to push forward, and a shot from Wilson, just outside the penalty area, flies wide of the far post.
Then on 55 mins another attack, includes Dunn, Wilson who slides the ball to Reid, whose shot from 10 yards is blocked by the defender.
Stoke continue to be the team on top, but cannot create a shot on target.
Chertsey have another couple of chances but again our back four is more than enough for them.
Still no goal-mouth action as we move past the 70th minute.
Sam Argent appears to have picked up a knock, and is replaced by Brody Peart (74 mins)
A nasty tackle on Peart, see their player go in the book.
Still very little to note as we move into the last five minutes of the game, but with us leading by the two goals, we are more than happy with this.
Then in the 87th minute the ball is pushed through to Ezio, who breaks clear, takes a touch then slides it past the keeper into the net. GOAL!!! Chertsey Town 0 – 3 Basingstoke Town (Touray 87 mins)
We make two late changes with Callum Winchcombe replacing George Reid and Aiden Lewis replacing James Clark.
We play out the added minutes of added time and the referee blows the final whistle, on a night when Stoke get some revenge for last season.
Full-time Score: Chertsey Town 0 v 3 Basingstoke Town
Touray 30 & 89 mins, Wilson 34 mins
Match Thought’s
A superb evening out for all the Stoke fans who travelled to the game. Touray’s two neat finishes and a Wilson stunner, is more than enough to deal with Chertsey.
Up Next:
In eight days-time we are back on the road with a tough match-up at Leatherhead, with expected train strikes.
