Monday Morning Quarterback 2019-20 Season – Issue 6

Monday Morning Quarterback 2019-2010 Issue 6 Upon Further Review

On Saturday afternoon the Btg were singing the “Dan Brownlie had a dream, to build a football team” chant and an hour later it appears the dream does go on.

In a small reported crowd of 137, with mainly the normal Stoke following descending on Kemble and then Cirencester, Stoke advanced into the 1st round draw, to be held later this morning, after another hard-working performance that saw us take the lead three times on the Corinium Stadium artificial pitch.

The change has been quite phenomenal and the early season mood around the club and fan base has started to shift away from panic towards one with promise, but there is still a long way to go and a few league wins before we can start moving up the league.

Yesterday’s game again confirmed that we have a talented young squad of players which is supplanted by the extended loanees from AFC Wimbledon and Forest Green Rovers. What is noticeably different from previous squads is the pace this team has behind the likes of Andrady, Herbert and Edwards. This is not to say the others don’t have pace, but when we break, we do it with pace that most teams at this level can’t generally handle. Unsung players like Ben Cook and Harrison Cliff continue to improve and are now the future in that holding midfield role and as stated by many fans the insertion of Aaron Kuhl, should bring even more stability into the team.

So yesterday goals by Cook, Andrady and in the end the winner by Robinson, confirmed what I stated in the match preview that we would need to score at least two goals to earn the win. Zach Robinson after initially failing to find the net, has now scored in his last three appearances.

So what other Division One South teams progressed in the FA Trophy this weekend?

Seven other teams were winners, Thatcham Town who won 3-1 on the road at Barnstaple, Larkhall 2-0 winners at Didcot Town, Frome Town disposed of Bideford Town 2-1 at home, AFC Totton with the only goal on the road at Slimbridge, Melksham with a 2-0 home victory against Wantage Town, Sholing’s 2-1 home win against Bristol Manor Farm and the biggest shock of the round was Paulton Rovers 0-3 home loss to Willand Rovers.

Still in the draw are four further teams, Evesham Utd who drew 1-1 at home to Halesowen, Highworth Town and Cinderford who also drew 1-1 and Winchester City whose home against Thame Utd was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

With no games in our league this weekend, and only two played last Tuesday, those being Cinderford’s 4-3 win at home to Evesham Utd, whilst Moneyfields and Cirencester played out a goal-less draw down in Portsmouth, the top and bottom remained unchanged.

The top of the table still looks like this;

The Top Five in Our League

TEAM PLD WON DRAWN LOST PTS
Paulton Rovers    9    7     1   1 22
Frome Town   10    6     3   1 21

Sholing (17th) vs Bideford Town

Then on Sunday

Evesham Utd vs Willand Rovers (15th)
