The kick is headed away clear but Cook is able to retrieve it and send a curling cross back into the box, which Shane Hollamby makes a good connection, forcing the Poole keeper to tip the ball over the crossbar for another Stoke corner. This time the corner-kick from the right is met by the towering Bill Upton who heads the ball down low to the keeper’s right, who attempts to make the save, but has the ball gone over the line, as Angell then forces it into the Poole net GOAL! Poole Town 0 – 1 Basingstoke Town (Upton 32 mins)

Poole have a little more possession in our half and a cross from the right just flies past the outstretched foot of a Poole forward, and the ball rolls out for a goal-kick.
Poole then have a shot from just inside the penalty box, but it’s a comfortable save by Simon Grant in goal.

The game moves into the final minute of the first-half, we attack again and the ball is slid to Ben Cook directly in front of the goal, but his shot from 20 yards out is deflected away for a corner, which is cleared by Poole.
We are now in the last minute of six-added minutes and Michael Atkinson appears to have picked up a worrying injury, and the referee decides to blow the halftime whistle, with Stoke taking a deserved lead into the break.

Halftime Score: Poole Town 0 v 1 Basingstoke Town
Before the second-half gets underway, we are forced into our first change as Michael Atkinson is replaced by Massimo Giamattei.

The first few minutes of the second-half has Poole pushing for an equaliser, but a poor shot and a header straight at Grant, is all they can create.
Stoke pushed forward over the next few minutes through Hodges, who is clearly not 100%, and Le Paih as they create some nice passing moves, but we are unable to put a shot on target.

The pitch now getting heavier as the game goes on, has Poole pushing forward, as we seem to drop ten yards in defence, but good work from Hollamby, then James Clarke keeps them at bay.

It’s time for our second change as Paul Hodges is replaced by Stefan Brown (72 mins)
Stoke then come forward and neat move involving Cook, Le Paih and Ferdinand, who slides the ball across the six-yard line, but there’s no Stoke player to put the ball away, and Poole clear.
Now in the final ten of normal time, Poole win two further corners, but Stoke’s defence deals with them.

The referee who has already booked a couple of Stoke players, adds two further players in the space of a minute, but does nothing when a Poole player throws the ball away in dissent.

Now in the final two minutes of normal time, another Poole attack is wasted as a shot flies high over the bar. Another attack a minute later is wastefully headed over the bar.

Now deep into added-time, we make our third change with Liam Ferdinand replaced by Shamar Moore (93 mins).
A good defensive header by Billy Upton is the final action of the game, as the referee blows the final whistle on another away victory for Basingstoke.

Full-time Score: Poole Town 0 v 1 Basingstoke Town
                                                  Upton 32 mins

Match Thought’s
For the second away game in a row a much changed starting line-up, saw the whole Stoke team battle for and deserve the three points, on what was an awful pitch. Again the whole defence played their part, and a good debut by Curtis Angell, but special mention for James Clarke, who filled in yet once more in another position this season.
Billy Upton’s sixth goal of the season, was all that was needed as Poole Town’s attack looked woefully short of confidence.
Yet more injury concerns, especially to Michael Atkinson, means our physios will have a lot of work to do this week.
Up Next:
We have a week until our next match as we host Plymouth Parkway next Saturday (24th).

Match Report by Martin French..

Southern League Premier South Division – Saturday 17th February 2024 Poole Town 0 v 1 Basingstoke Town Attendance – 728 Where: Black & Gold Stadium, School Lane, Poole.
