\nOur fighting performance and deserved point at Gloucester City reversed our recent performances in the FA Cup, and sets us up for this Saturday\u2019s re-arranged fixture against Gosport.
\nLast season, we played the Boro four times. Initialling losing down there in the FA Cup, we then came out top of a seven-goal thriller in Gosport in the league. Then earlier this year we beat them in the Hampshire Snr Cup, only to lose to them four days later in the league 3-0.<\/p>\n
Our Opponents
\n<\/b>It is has been a busy week for Gosport, as firstly four notable players left the club. The Boro then confirmed that following a month-long interim period, Jermaine McGlashen, had been confirmed as Gosport\u2019s first-team Manager.
\nGosport, have got off to a slightly better start to the season than Basingstoke, and last Saturday\u2019s 3-1 defeat of Taunton Town, leaves them in twelfth, with a record of Pld 7 Won 3 Drawn 1 Lost 3 GF 10, GA 8 and 10pts. Their two other wins were a 2-1 win at Frome Town, and 4-2 home victory against Malvern Town. Their away record sits at 1 Win & 2 losses. Similar to us, their FA Cup dreams are gone, after a 3-1 loss to Plymouth Parkway.<\/p>\n
The Boro have made a huge change to their playing squad, since we last played them, which includes the loss of well-known striker Rafa Ramos. Their strikeforce still contains club legend Daniel Wooden, who started at the club in 2010, and apart from a short stint at AFC Portchester, where he rejoined in 2021, he has been an ever-present. Gosport also recently added ex-Winchester City striker Trevor Caborn, who has returned for a second stint with the club. Well-travelled Michael Fernandes appeared on the teamsheet last week, so I assume he is on loan from Farnborough once more.<\/p>\n
The midfield includes Jacob Gardiner-Smith, who has played for a number of higher step football teams, such as Wycombe & Hemel Hempstead, but more recently time at Hungerford & Sholing. Back for his second season, is Jordan Ngalo who was at Salisbury last season, and prior to that Dorchester Town. George Penn is another player who has joined via Salisbury, having started his career at Bromley. 48 -hours ago the club announced the signing of promising midfielder Isaac Brown, who joins from Ascot United.<\/p>\n
In defence they have Rory Williams is back for another season and captains the side from his left-back role. He started his career in Boro\u2019s youth ranks, but has also played for Havant & Waterlooville & Andover. At right back is usually Benny Read, and regarded as a classy right back who has previously played for Havant & Waterlooville, AFC Totton, and most recently Sholing. In August they added Amadou Jallow and Jerry Wilsthire. Jallow, started out at Havant and Waterlooville as well as stints at Bognor, Kingstonian and Horndean, whilst Wiltshire, has played for a number of clubs over the last two season, including Chertsey & Leatherhead. Ben Greenwood is back at Privett Park, after last season\u2019s loan deal from Farnborough. He started his career through the academy ranks at AFC Bournemouth. Centre-back Michael Agboola, played his first game for Gosport last week, having previously being at Berkhamsted. Another player making his debut last week was Jordan Stepney. He was on-loan last season from Uxbridge, having previously been at Farnham Town. In goal it could be young James Holden, after Kie Plumbly, left earlier this week.<\/p>\n
Our Basingstoke Town Side
\n<\/b>Basingstoke return to Winklebury following their successful beating of Poole Town in Dorset, with striker Miles Obodo\u2019s finishing, the difference in a tough battle.
\nWith the point last weekend, we currently sit in fifteenth in the league, with our record at Pld 7 Won 2 Drawn 2 Lost 3, GF 12, GA 13 and 8pts.<\/p>\n
Turning to our Stoke squad, a more clearer update was provided of the long list of our current injured players.<\/p>\n
Based on the above, tomorrow Miles Obodo will once more lead our attacking front, and leads our goalscoring chart with four at this point. Christos Papkonstantinou won the nod for the starting No.7 last week over Jeremaih Okine-Peters, and depending on how we set-up, this could be the same tomorrow. Andrei Chiriac got to make his league debut as a second-half substitute last weekend, so he will likely again be part of the matchday squad. Finn Evans injury in training, means his return will be at least two weeks away, whilst Cheick Sylla is out till October, whilst Jed Brown\u2019s injury will keep him out till November.<\/p>\n
The midfield took another hit last week, as vice-captain Louis McGrory, and although signs may not be as bad as first thought, it may be best to give him more time to recover. This will mean Tom Blake will lead our midfield, and again will provide our emphasis going forwards. James Henry will look to be the holding midfielder, whilst being our dead-ball taker. D\u2019Andre Brown could well take McGrory\u2019s slot in midfield, although Alex Solomon will be pushing for a start here too. The season debuts of Amardeep Singh and John Adebiyi, still seem to be some way off, with Singh possibly by the end of September, but Adebiyi\u2019s return is unknown following scan results. Lloyd Snell has no fixed return date yet.<\/p>\n
Billy Upton will once more lead the team and the defensive line and made two important tackles\/blocks to keep Gloucester out last week. He will likely be joined by Bernie Tanner in the middle, although Sulayman Ceesay is pushing for a start again. The return of fan-loved Lewis Colwill, was a huge success and will occupy a role in defence. Casey Bocarro, continues to proves his value to the team, and will likely take either defensive back roles. Jonathan Gjoshe is the other option here, depending on how we set-up. Injury-wise we still have a number of players waiting to return, and it is likely to be October before we see the return of Jack Ball, Soctt Armsworth, Joe O\u2019Loughlin & Ben Jefford. Simon Grant made important saves, when needed last week and will don the keepers jersey once more.<\/p>\n
Last week\u2019s performance now needs backing up tomorrow afternoon, and we should go into the game with the confidence that we can overturn a Gosport team, with so many changes at their club.<\/p>\n
The weather is expected to be cloudy but warm tomorrow afternoon, so come down and get behind the boys tomorrow afternoon.<\/p>\n
