Saturday 21sth July 2018 Basingstoke Town 0 – 2 Maidenhead Utd Att 205
Basingstoke’s line-up for this match was in goal Brendan Norris, at the back, Orvis, Nditi, Demuria, Hollamby, in midfield Kennedy (Capt), Atkinson, Bennett, Deadfield & Akers and up front Bunting.
The bench contained Stow, Bayliss, Collier, Osbourne, Goater, Smart, Leggett & McAdden.
Maidenhead Utd clearly came to win this match, as they fielded a very strong for this match.
Basingstoke started well and put attempts on the Utd goal in the first 10 minutes of the match. Maidenhead, who clearly looked more ready for the start of the season than Eastleigh were, put two fines moves together that Norris was able to keep out with a little luck here and there.
Stoke again put more pressure on the opposition’s goal before half-time, but the Utd keeper was able to deal with them and we went goal-less at half-time.
The second-half saw a couple of changes, and Stoke were again initially on the front foot, but crosses by Deadfield & Leggett were well defended by Utd’s back four. Then Maidenhead pounced on a long ball over the top. Norris in goal was caught in two minds and when he decided to come out the Utd forward comfortably chipped him and we were 1- 0 down.
Stoke came back on the attack, but Bunting seemed all alone up top and was not getting the service he wanted. Akers, in a 1-2 move hit a fierce drive at the Utd keeper, who made a fine stop.
As we made a host of changes, this was Maidenhead’s chance to come forward. They put 3 attempts on our goal in quick succession, but all were either well-saved, or just wide.
Then with just a few minutes left, Maidenhead struck again, a similar goal, where Norris was not at fault, but another clinical finish.
Final Score: Basingstoke Town 0 – 2 Maidenhead Utd
Final Thought’s: To be honest although we had a lot of possession in the game, the Utd defence dealt with us comfortably. They were as expected, far more clinical than us, but against National League opposition, we performed ok.
