Match Preview: Hampshire Snr Cup Semi-Final

Basingstoke Town v Southampton U23’s

When: Tuesday 2nd April 2019 Kick-off 7.45pm

Where: The Camrose Stadium, Western Way, Basingstoke. RG22 6EZ

We head back to the Hampshire Senior Cup and a huge Semi-Final match-up against Southampton U23’s under the Camrose lights tomorrow evening, following a hugely important league win at Wimborne Town.

This will be a good test to see how far some of our players have truly come. I’m also sure Martin Kuhl will have a full squad to choose from, as the players will clearly want to also test themselves also against a good Southampton squad.

Southampton’s progression to the Semi-Final took the following guise;

2nd Rnd Chichester 0 – 2 Southampton U23’s, 3rd Rnd Southampton U23’s 1 – Fleet Town

Qtr Final Bournemouth Poppies 0 – 2 Southampton U23’s

Goals by forward Jonathan Afolabi in the Fleet Town victory and then Captain Tom O’Connor free-kick and Jamie Bradley Green in the Qtr final win over Bournemouth poppies

What that does also show is that they have yet to concede a goal in the competition.

As for Basingstoke, our progression has also been good, as we have only conceded two goals on the way to the Semi-Final.

Our route was as follows;

2nd Rnd Basingstoke Town 2 – 1 Farnborough, 3rd Rnd Hartley Wintney 1 – 3 Basingstoke Town,

Qtr Final Fareham Town 0 – 7 Basingstoke Town

Our goals in this competition have been scored by Sam Smart & Callum Bunting against Farnborough. A brace by Ben Wright and one for Sam Argent accounted for the Hartley Wintney win. Then both Wright and Sam Smart with two each, and goals from Sam Deadfield, Zidane Akers and Dean Stow accounted for the seven goals at Fareham Town.

Although the league is of far more importance, it would be good to get to another Cup Final, as we move to Winklebury.

I assume that new boy Reece Rusher may be cup-tied for this game.

Whoever wins tomorrow night, it has been confirmed that the final will be held at Eastleigh FC and the other finalists have already been confirmed as Havant & Waterlooville.

Odds please Ian, when you get a chance.
