Match Report: Frome Town 1 – 4 Basingstoke Town

Evo-Stick Premier League Division South – Saturday 25th August 2018

Blindman’s Brewery Stadium

Frome Town 1 – 4 Basingstoke Town Attendance 224

Well what a great day and deserved win in Frome!

Jason’s line-up for today. In goal McAdden, the back four Stow, Hollamby, Bayliss & Orvis. George Bennett moves into midfield with, Kennedy (Capt), Deadfield & Akers. Up top was Smart & Argent.

On the bench; Philby, McKnight, Bunting & Wright.

Basingstoke are on the initial front foot as they hold possession in Frome’s half for most of the first 5 minutes, especially down the right win Stow feeding Smart. We win a free-kick but Stow’s kick flies way over the bar.

Then on 8mins this partnership leads to Stoke’s first goal as a neat pass to Smart allows him to cross to Argent, whose first time shot finds the bottom of the net and GOAL Stoke are 1 – 0.

Stoke continue to take command of the game and Frome are unable to get anything going in our half, until 13mins when a cross finds an open Robins forward, but his shot is way wide and over the bar.

Then on 14 mins, Stoke should have been 2 up, when Smart receives a lovely pass but the Frome keeper Teale, makes a great save.

Basingstoke then do make it 2 nil when we win another corner on the left. The cross finds Hollamby at the back whose header initially looks to be stopped, but it somehow finds it’s way into the back of the net GOAL Stoke 2 – 0.

Although Basingstoke are still in control, the Robins are now trying to attack down our wings, but our defence is playing strong today. this is proven on 20 mins when a Robins forward has a shot that is well blocked out for a corner. We defend the corner easily.

Frome seem to be starting to resort to leaving their feet in a little here and there follows 2 or 3 heavy tackles, firstly on Argent, the linesman waves it away then decides to tie his laces up, rather than make a decision. The next is a really bad tackle on Kennedy, there is a bit of handbags by a few players which results in bookings for Argent and a Frome player who could have seen red?

Frome are back in our half for a couple of minutes and a shot is well saved by McAdden.

Then on the stroke of half-time we break with a lovely pass from Zidan to Smart but his shot is well blocked for a corner. Bennett’s corner is half-cleared and a skirmish around the penalty spot results in Kennedy being pulled down and the ref points to the spot for a Stoke penalty. As usual I don’t watch it, but Stow I am reliably informed puts it away to the bottom left-hand corner of the net GOAL Stoke 3 – 0.

The ref then blows for half-time and we return to the nice Frome clubhouse for a replacement refreshment with it being Frome Town 0 – 3 Basingstoke Town.

The second half seems to be a replica from the first half as Stoke seem to be pressing forward time and time again. Akers is now starting to show the right back a clean pair of hills as he waltzes past him twice in the space of two minutes, his crosses are hacked away. Then on 51mins from a free-kick taken by Bennett, Argent should have scored, but it flies over the bar.

Frome make a substitution and have a couple of attacks, but both shots go wide.
Then on 59mins, Frome are back in the box, there is some confusion and Cottle for the Robins pulls one back. Frome 1 – 3 Basingstoke.

Then never fear Sam DEADFIELD’s here as lovely play from the restart by Akers, and Sam slams the ball home GOAL to make it Frome 1 – 4 Basingstoke Town.

Stoke are back in control and all the fight out of Frome seems to have gone. We make some substitution’s as first McKnight replaces Deadfield I think.
We create another chance for Akers whose shot is just dragged wide. Hollamby is then replaced by Harry Philby.
More attacking play by Smart down the right, result in a good save by Teale in the Frome goal on 78 mins. Bunting then replaces Sam Argent who has another solid performance.

The last few minutes there is very little action by either team as we pass it around mainly in Frome’s half before the ref blows the final whistle.

Final Score: Frome Town 1 – 4 Basingstoke Town

Final Comments – A good confident, assured performance today against what seems a poor Frome team. We were never really troubled for once and a good all-round performance by the team.

let’s have some more on Monday at home to Gosport Borough.
